Ribbon Hero 2 – Clippy’s Second Chance

You’ve tried games that test your card playing, your imaginary farming skills, and your ability to hurl small birds. Finally there’s a game that will make you better at your job and it stars everyone’s favourite character who you love to hate, Clippy.

If he was alive in Office today, he’d probably be saying something like this to me now:

It looks like you’re writing a blog post, would you like me to:

  1. Research some of the keywords you’re typing ?
  2. SEO optimise your headings?
  3. Right click and turn into a yapping dog?

A few weeks back at MIX11, Stephen Sinofsky mentioned that it was the 10 year anniversary of Clippy’s retirement from the office suite. When he said that, I took a moment to fondly recall the playful animations, the joyful smiles and the helpful hints. Then I shuddered myself back to the present day and carried on.

However, it seems that Clippy is alive and well and still helping users find their way around Microsoft Office, this time, in the new game released from Office Labs called Ribbon Hero 2 (http://www.ribbonhero.com/). And it is getting some great responses across the web including GeekWire – “Never let it be said that the people at Microsoft don’t have a sense of humor.”

This is not the sort of learning tool that I’d use myself, I prefer a mixture of brute force, Bing or spinning in my chair and asking @simonster but I have had Ribbon Hero 2 installed for a few weeks and am enjoying seeing my score go up as I casually use office in my day to day work – that means I’m at least doing some things right. Eventually, when I see that score not moving I intend to find out why and no doubt, learn some useful Office skillz. See this video for more:
